NENE: KOKO DESERVES SEAT OF ‘FAKE’ SENATOR
July 21, 2011
Former Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Q. Pimentel Jr. said
today that his son, Lawyer Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, deserves
to take over the seat now occupied by Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri.
“Political justice demands that Koko should be seated today, not
in October or later,” said the elder Pimentel, who now stands as
Koko’s legal counsel.
“Our electoral protest has been vindicated by the recent pronouncement
of former Maguindanao provincial election supervisor Lintang Bedol
that the 2007 senatorial election was rigged to favor Zubiri,” Pimentel
said.
Detained former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Governor Zaldy
Ampatuan had earlier made the same claim of widespread fraud in the
province in the 2007 elections.
“The revelations of Bedol and Ampatuan, though late in the day, merely
validate what we have been saying all along: that Zubiri sits in the
Senate on the basis of a fake mandate from manufactured ballots,”
Pimentel said. He added that “The massive manipulation of the results
of the elections in 2007 in Maguindanao which those publicly aired
statements speak of and which are based on previously established
evidence and proof may already be accorded judicial notice, so to
speak, so that the Senate Electoral Tribunal and the Supreme Court
ought probably to decide the protest of Koko without further delay.
Otherwise, to borrow the thrust of a trite legal aphorism, justice
further delayed will be justice forever denied.”
“We have it straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, that the
2007 senatorial election in Maguindanao was ridden with fraud in favor
of Zubiri and other administration candidates, which led to Koko being
dislodged from the winning column after leading for most of the
counting,” the former senator said.
The young Pimentel eventually ended up in 13th place in the final
Comelec count, and later filed an electoral protest before the Senate
Electoral Tribunal (SET).
“We have fought a lonely and quixotic battle against overwhelming odds,
first against the Lakas-Kampi ruling party and now even against former
colleagues in the Senate who have chosen to entertain Zubiri’s
counter-protest which is totally without basis and is clearly a delaying
tactic to stave off his removal from the Senate,” Pimentel said.
“To the senator-members of the SET, do not do tomorrow what you can do
today. Take the side of justice and what is right. Decide on the merits
of our protest, not because Zubiri is a colleague,” Pimentel said.
“Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s inglorious plundering ways and sabotage of
the electoral system are matters for the criminal justice system to
take care of,” the former senator pointed out.
“For the moment, the fake ballots that led to the fake proclamation of a
fake senator need immediate rectification to do substantial justice to
the millions of people who voted for Koko,” Pimentel said.
