Floods displace residents in two Malaybalay villages
June 22, 2011
MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon – Heavy rains last Sunday, June 19, brought flashfloods in two (2) barangays, here, displacing at least 14 families afecting a total of 39 persons.
Reports from the Malaybalay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) said 13 houses were submerged in chest-deep floodwaters and one (1) washed out by the strong flow of water caused by incessant rains in Barangays Casisang and Impalambong.
Both areas are located near the Mamala Creek, a big canal which is usually dry and has water only when it rains, Virginia Flores, Malaybalay City Social Welfare and Development Officer (CSWDO) and concurrent deputized civil defense coordinator said.
“Residents reported that flood started by 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 pm of June 19, but there was no report of casualties, so far,” Flores said.
However, a certain Tirso Mandawagon, whose house was destroyed/carried by flood,
suffered a minor cut on his hand when he tried to tie his house and cut off the power supply of the live wire near his house.
Rescuers in Malaybalay said there were no people stranded in their homes due to the “forced evacuation” order of barangay leaders.
As of press time, flood victims opted to be temporarily housed at their neighbors and relatives while mud was being removed from inside their homes.
Flores said the CSWD had already conducted the needs and analysis survey of the affected areas and extended clothing and food assistance consisting of rice, noodles and sardines from the CDRRMC to the flood victims. (PIA-10/Ruby Leonora R. Balistoy)
