Troops overrun another NPA camp in southern Mindanao

Government troops on Friday overran a camp of the New People’s Army (NPA) communist rebels after a 30-minute clash in Barangay Sibulan, Toril District Davao City, military authorities said.
Col. Kurt Decapia, commander of the Army’s 84th Infantry Battalion, said the troops clashed with about 50 rebels at about 9:50 a.m. Friday that resulted in the wounding of two soldiers and scores of rebels.
Decapia said the camp of the NPA’s Local Terrorist Front-54 was discovered through the help of the civilians.
Decapia said the fallen NPA camp has wooden bunkers with running trenches that could accommodate around 50 people.
He identified the wounded soldiers as Private (Pvt.) John Mark Colango and Pvt. Alexander Alborta.
He said the NPAs abandoned their camp and fled to different direction dragging their casualties.
“They are on the run and our troops are currently on pursuit. They have suffered casualties in the exchange of fire but were carried by their comrades away as they fled,” Decapia said.
“We will catch-up with them in due time with the help of the people who are keeping us abreast of their whereabouts,” Decapia said.
Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commander of 10th Infantry Division said the discovery of the camp was a proof of the cooperation of the people and “these terrorists will soon realize they have nowhere to go but surrender.”
“If there were some wounded on their part, it is better for them to leave the wounded so that we can bring them to the hospital and give them appropriate medical attention. Many of their wounded die because they were not given proper medical treatment and worse, they are being buried in the mountains without the knowledge of their families,” Holganza said.
“We have proven that we truly care for everyone with the many instances of NPAs who were wounded just like Zaldy Canete, alias Jinggoy, whom we took care and our soldiers even donated their own blood for him to survive,” Holganza said.
The NPA under the absolute control of the Communist Party of the Philippines has been fighting the government for the last 41 years but no significant gain was established, which political analysts attribute to its lack of people’s support due to its terroristic activities.
The fall of the NPA camp Friday was the second encampment that fell into the hands of the government forces this week in southern Mindanao region.
The first NPA camp that was overran by the troops was last Sunday in Sitio Carampel, Barangay Aliwagwag, Cateel town, Davao Oriental.
Two NPAs were confirmed killed while improvised bombs and firearms were recovered by the troops. (Philippine News Agency)
